New Vice President Advances Capitol College



Early this December, Capitol College welcomed Michael G. Gibbs, Ed.D, as the new Vice President of College Advancement.

Prior to his new position, Dr. Gibbs served as the Chief Advancement Officer for the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) in San Francisco. He has also served in advancement and leadership capacities at DePaul University and Saint Mary's University. He is an accomplished fundraiser, writer, and lecturer, and was an adjunct faculty member at both DePaul University and the Spertus College Center for Nonprofit Management located in Chicago, Illinois.

“I am pleased Michael has joined the Capitol College family,” comments Capitol president Dr. Michael Wood. “His successful fund-raising experience and his affinity for our new programs like the Innovation and Leadership Institute and Space Operations Institute will help us significantly in achieving reputation and finance goals.”

Dr. Gibbs continually contributes to the literature in his area of expertise; he is the lead editor and contributing author for the book Science Educators Under the Stars: Amateur Astronomers Engaged in Education and Public Outreach, and was also a co-editor for the ASP's conference proceedings from the 2007 Chicago national conference and the 2008 St. Louis symposium.

Additionally, Dr. Gibbs coauthored several published articles on topics like professional development for in-service teachers, integrating technology into the K-12 classroom, and astronomy/space science education and public outreach.

As a national and international speaker, Dr. Gibbs lectured in countries such as Ireland and Bahrain, served as a member of the U.S. Development Committee for the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, and is a member of the board of trustees for the National Hispanic Institute and recently appointed the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's board.

Dr. Gibbs received his bachelor's, master's, and doctorate from DePaul University and earned professional certificates from the Fund Raising School of the Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University, the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing and DePaul University.
