Capitol Cyber Sleuths Program | Capitol Technology University

The GenCyber + Capitol Technology University Capitol Cyber Sleuths program is back! On November 18^th from 10am to 2pm there will be a workshop to support the growth of the next generation of cybersecurity experts for the nation. This program strives to spread awareness, inspire, and increase cybersecurity interest while building a competent, diverse, and adaptable cybersecurity workforce pipeline through the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C).

This program is designed for K-12 educators and teachers. As a part of the solution to address the continued need for skilled cyber security professionals, Capitol Cyber Sleuths provides awareness of college and career pathway opportunities for K-12 teachers to impart to their students. Additionally, this program is focused on helping teachers educate their students in areas of cyber security to understand correct and safe online behavior, while improving STEM teaching methods and cybersecurity content for K-12 curricula. With an emphasis on diversity amongst teachers and disciplines involved, the Capitol Cyber Sleuths program will reach all racial and ethnic groups in the disciplines of cybersecurity, computer science, information technology (IT), engineering, and other related computing fields. Capitol Tech believes that cyber security education is essential for successful careers in today’s world and seeks to provide educational opportunities for as many teachers and students as possible.

Participation in the Capitol Cyber Sleuths program will have the following benefits:

Hybrid learning opportunity for a combination of convenient, online access, hands-on technical experience, and in-person networking.
Learning from professionals in the field with Capitol Tech’s finest professors of practice and leaders in cyber industries, as well as provided resources and materials to develop a strong understanding of fundamental concepts.
Access to an established community of interest (COI) focused on cybersecurity content, best practices, pedagogy, resources, and advice on starting and sustaining cybersecurity education at your institution, available during and after participation in the program.
This workshop will count towards Professional Development credit for K-12 Educators and Teachers
New teacher applicants who are accepted into this program will receive a stipend of $250 upon successful completion of the program.

Enrollment and Benefits

The following enrollment and selection requirements apply:
- Selection limited to teachers and educators.
- Teachers will be provided access to the application link and assistance with applying if needed.
- All teachers will have an equal chance to participate in the program regardless of race, ethnicity, special needs, gender, or religious beliefs.
- The estimated number of teachers for enrollment in the program is 50.
- A waitlist for the program is available.

Curriculum

The following curriculum is focused on building and developing the Capitol Cyber Sleuths Cybersecurity First Concepts and First Principles where teachers will learn computer forensics topics and perform activities to demonstrate how evidentiary data can be retrieved from digital media.

The Post-Program Retreat will be conducted asynchronously utilizing Zoom Recordings and Canvas to deliver content after the Workshop with virtual support. These lessons and assessments will be uploaded to Canvas for sharing with fellow teachers. Exemplary lessons will be selected and recorded via Zoom as a part of the after-workshop reflections and assessments. The Program Office will provide these exemplary lessons for possible distribution via approved channels such as CLARK, CARD, and National Cryptologic Museum Foundation (NCMF) high school outreach programs. The end-of-workshop assessments will be discussed with the teachers as part of focused feedback and reflection sessions. Teachers will also reflect on lessons learned from attending local and national cybersecurity-related events such as BSIDES (Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland), Cyber Maryland, and Maryland Computer Science Teachers Association-sponsored events.
