For the second time since the original residence halls were built on the Laurel campus in 1989, Capitol undergraduate students will have a new choice of where to live. Starting this fall, Capitol is instituting an off-campus housing plan, for qualifying undergraduate students.
Capitol has worked an agreement with the Towers at UTC, for five apartments in Hyattsville Md., complete with a full kitchen, fours bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a common area. This semester, 18 undergrads will be housed in the new location.
The new housing option is perfect for upperclassmen who are ready to make the step off campus. The Towers at UTC are walking distance from the metro, feature a student lounge and student computer center, central air and heat, a rooftop pool, and numerous other amenities.
“There are a lot of college students from University of Maryland and Howard [University] living there. The apartments have a mall and movie theatre right across the street, a 24/7 gym nearby and a rooftop pool,” junior Scarlin Hernandez said. “They have a lot of residence appreciation activities going on and it’s a really safe area too. You have to show an ID card to get into any of the buildings and we saw a bunch of security guards when we were touring.”
Students living off campus will also have shuttle access, bringing them back and forth from campus to their apartments. Nearby department and grocery stores also add to the convenience of the off-campus housing.
In addition to new housing for undergraduate students, the fall semester will also bring a new degree program to graduate students, the master of science in astronautical engineering. The degree is perfect for those with engineering backgrounds that are looking for careers in the space industry.
Another new introduction to the Capitol community this fall is the alumni discount, which affords a 10% reduction in tuition for all Capitol alumni to any of the institution’s master’s or bachelor’s degrees. When it comes to employer tuition reimbursement, graduate students can now submit employer authorization forms to the business office at the time of registration, along with one third of the tuition cost and defer their balance until 10 days after classes have ended.
The 2011-2012 academic year is just weeks away, with undergraduate classes beginning Monday, August 22. Graduate classes will begin the following Monday, August 29. Welcome to all our incoming freshmen, and welcome back to all undergraduate and graduate students!
