LAUREL, MD, October 1, 2014 -- Capitol College today announced its new designation as Capitol Technology University, reflecting its identity as an educational institution dedicated to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curricula across undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. The new name and university designation have been approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, reflecting the school's status as a full-fledged institution of higher learning.

"Our designation as a university reflects who we are today. Capitol has offered graduate degrees in technology-related fields since 2004. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics serve as the foundation for many careers of the future. We're driven by a mission to prepare students for tomorrow's workforce through hands-on instruction in classroom settings and online in these vital areas."

Since its start more than 85 years ago, Capitol Technology University has remained true to its mission - preparing students for careers in a quickly changing world.
The school was originally founded in Washington, DC, as the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in 1927 by Eugene H. Rietzke. A Navy veteran and radio operator, Rietzke foresaw the need for an advanced training institute that could produce talented radio and electronics technicians. Capitol entered a new era in the mid-1950s, when it expanded its reach to new programs in applied engineering and electronics. Over the following decades, it began offering academic degrees, moved to its current 52-acre campus in Laurel, MD and became known as Capitol College.
Capitol introduced master's degrees in the 1990s. In 2010, the school launched its first doctoral program to prepare students for leadership roles in the burgeoning field of cybersecurity.
