Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) Chief Executive David Edwards met with Capitol Technology University leadership to explore our aviation programs and our Laurel, Maryland campus on Thursday, October 23.
Established in 1866, RAeS is an international organization dedicated to aerospace, aviation, and space communities to further the advancement of aeronautical art, science, and engineering around the world. Edwards has been a member of RAeS since 1999, became a fellow in 2010, and was appointed as Chief Executive in 2021. In his four years in this role, he has noted significant advancements and areas of interest for the next generation of air and space professionals.
“Aerospace is so exciting, and there are loads of opportunities for youth in this area,” said Edwards. “This cusp now—of new technology and the democratization of travel through air taxis and similar innovations—has the potential to transform our world. A renewed focus on environmental impact, improvements in wind technology, and advancements in propulsion systems will drive the next wave of progress, redefining how we move, connect, and sustain our planet.”
As a strong advocate for inspiring young people to pursue careers in aerospace, Edwards is “keen to understand the challenges facing today’s youth,” and said that “meeting through Society events where they can network with top leaders in the industry is one of the best ways to connect and support their growth.”
Edwards' visit to Capitol Tech was a stop on his North American tour to connect with RAeS partners and members, along with other stakeholders in the aerospace industry. He was welcomed by President Bradford Sims, who is also a Fellow of RAeS, and Chair of Aviation Frank Turney to discuss current on-campus offerings for aviation education.
“It was a great visit, getting to see all of the variety of courses on offer at Capitol Tech—as well as seeing the cutting-edge technology that students get to use," said Edwards. "It’s always great to get out and about and learn what our Corporate Partners are doing and to help each other develop."
As a corporate partner of RAeS, Capitol Tech is able to provide the opportunity for international networking, debate, resources, and professional development.
“The RAeS and its partner institutions encourage the next generation of talent through not only traditional programs and accreditation, but also by providing mentorship, career pathways, and additional benefits to our over 26,000 members worldwide,” said Edwards.
One way Capitol Tech fulfills this mission is through our Aviation Professional Pilot Bachelor of Science program, which was recently authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to certify graduates for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with reduced flight hours. This prestigious designation provides significant time and cost savings for students completing our program.
“We are sincerely grateful to David Edwards and the Royal Aeronautical Society for their ongoing partnership,” said Dr. Sims “As a corporate partner of RAeS, our programs are enriched and strengthened through the organization's support and guidance, enabling us to better prepare our students for successful careers in aviation.”
The RAeS continues to broaden its international and educational engagement under Edwards’ leadership, and his visit to the U.S.—and to Capitol Tech—serves as a powerful invitation for the next generation to join the charge for aeronautical innovation.
