On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced a tragedy that changed our country forever. This year marks 25 years since that day when so many lives were claimed and families were devastated, yet extraordinary courage was shown among survivors, first responders, and communities in the face of unimaginable circumstances.
At Capitol Technology University, we are honored to have a dedicated space on campus to reflect on this time in our nation's history. In May 2002, the graduating class presented our university with a 9/11 memorial garden and bench as their class gift. The gift was made possible through the efforts of the Senior Class Gift Committee and coordinated by its co-chairs, Julie A. Cullember and Kimberly E. Jennings, creating a lasting tribute to those whose lives were forever changed by that tragedy.
Located near the breezeway outside our MA/COM Hall, the memorial garden offers a quiet place to reflect, once with a plaque that read:
“A tribute to the victims, survivors, rescuers, and loved ones of the attack on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and United Flight 93. God Bless America, Donated by the Class of 2002.”
The bench is inscribed with the words "Think of 9/11."
Capitol Tech will mark the 25 years since 9/11 alongside the 25th anniversary of our own cybersecurity programs, born at a pivotal time in the expansion of technology and the risks that it can bring. Our continuing commitment to protecting our nation (and beyond) from future attacks is reflected in these programs and more, including those in our cyberpsychology and intelligence, global security, and emergency management fields of study. We’re proud that our Capitol Tech students, faculty, and alumni contribute to that mission every day by identifying vulnerabilities, strengthening defenses, and helping safeguard people and critical infrastructure from emerging threats.
Today as we remember 9/11, we think first and foremost about the people who continue to carry the pain and loss of that day. Our campus memorial reminds us that behind every event are lives, families, communities, and stories that should never be forgotten.
