Capitol Technology University is now a proud sponsor of Parkland Magnet Middle School for Aerospace Technology's FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams. Through a $1,500 grant, Capitol Tech is helping approximately 20 students with robotics materials, registration fees, and competition expenses.
This collaboration reflects a mutual commitment to expanding access to hands-on STEM learning and inspiring the next generation of engineers and technology innovators at every age.
Parkland is one of three schools in Montgomery County, Maryland’s Middle School Magnet Consortium (MSMC). Parkland's advanced magnet program serves students in grades 6–8 and emphasizes applied mathematics, science, aerospace, and robotics engineering. Students learn how to build and program robotic rovers and other devices as well as how to work in teams to solve engineering problems and compete in challenges.
FTC is a global robotics program that partners with schools and communities developing teams and offering access to structured engineering competitions. During the 2024–2025 season, the program engaged more than 109,000 students across 81 countries.
On October 16, Parkland science and engineering teacher Laurel Reitman met with President Bradford Sims and Dr. Bill Butler, Vice President of Cyber Science Outreach and Partnerships, to receive the grant and talk about opportunities to continue the collaboration.
“Parkland is a shining example of how schools can inspire young students to pursue STEM,” said Dr. Butler. “Capitol Tech is proud to support Parkland's mission and looks forward to working with these talented students as they begin exploring future academic and career opportunities in STEM. Through partnerships like this, we can help cultivate the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and technology leaders.”
Supporting Parkland’s robotics teams is just one way Capitol Tech is continuing to help students gain practical experience that connects classroom learning with a future in tech. We also support the local robotics community by hosting events like the FIRST Robotics Competition at the Chesapeake Regional Kickoff and providing scholarship opportunities for students involved in competitive robotics. Students who pursue a degree at Capitol Tech can join our robotics team and participate in collegiate level competitions, including the VEX U Robotics Competition, where our team has previously received top rankings.
