Golfers at Capitol’s annual scholarship tournament tested their skills on a premier course Monday (October 16), enjoying a day of sport and camaraderie while raising funds to support students.

The golf outing, held at The Woodlands in central Maryland, netted enough revenue to fund three student scholarships, according to the university’s advancement office.

Heffner & Weber and Manekin Construction were the tournament sponsors. Heffner & Weber was instrumental in the development of Innovator’s Hall, the new, 220-bed student residence hall that opened at Capitol over the summer. Manekin constructed the building, finishing ahead of schedule and well in time for the ribbon-cutting on August 16.

Dan Sharpe, Manekin vice president, said sponsoring education is important to his firm. “We need younger talent coming into our industry. We need kids who are educated and able to contribute to their communities,” he said.

Manekin is particularly interested in the fact that Capitol is launching a construction management and critical infrastructure degree program, Sharpe said. Offering both undergraduate and graduate level degrees, the program not only prepares students for careers in construction management but includes cybersecurity coursework that will help them defend against digital threats – a growing priority as facilities become increasingly internet-reliant.

“It benefits our industry to have people coming out of school with this kind of training,” Sharpe said.

Tom Huber, representing Heffner & Weber, said his company is excited about Innovator’s Hall and looks forward to seeing Capitol continue to grow and expand.

“We’re really excited about how the residence hall turned out. Capitol was fantastic to work with – a great group of people.”

Hole sponsors included Grimm + Parker Architects, trustee emeritus John G. Puente, SB & Company, and board of trustees member Eliot M. Shatzman. Douglas Cayce was honored with a sponsorship from Mt. Royal Printing, while Randall Magiera commemorated the life of Rosie Magiera with a memorial sponsorship.

In all, eight teams competed during this year’s event. First place went to Pin Seekers, consisting of Haden Land, Chris Dionot, Dave Olson and Chris Thomas. Shanktopotomus, with Jeff Rhyne, Fred Hesser and Patty Chen, took second.

Tammy Gehr, representing General Dynamics, scored the longest women’s drive. The longest men’s drive was achieved by Jeff Rhyne. Haden Land, chairman of Capitol’s Board of Trustees, netted the award for Closest to the Pin.
