Why Cybersecurity is Among Biggest Concerns for Commercial Construction Firms—And How to Fight Back

Construction firms face many risks, from labor shortages and rising costs to supply chain disruptions and tight project deadlines. But cybersecurity has emerged as one of the industry's most significant, and least prepared-for, risks. And year over year, this threat has continued to grow. 

So why is construction attracting so much attention from cybercriminals? The answer lies in the construction industry's valuable data, interconnected supply chains, and growing reliance on digital technologies.

Why Construction Firms are Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks

In QBE North America's 2024 Commercial Construction Risk Report, 42% of 500 commercial contractors and construction managers surveyed identified cybersecurity as the industry's top risk, ahead of cost overruns, interest rates and labor shortages. 

GuidePoint Security reported 131 construction-sector ransomware victims in the first quarter of 2026, a 44% increase from Q1 2025, placing construction among the top five industries most targeted by ransomware.

Construction companies manage valuable information—including blueprints, engineering drawings, contracts, bids, financial records and employee data—while working across complex networks of contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and technology providers. That scattered interconnectedness creates opportunities for attackers.

According to GuidePoint, the construction industry's reliance on specialty contractors and connections to client and general-contractor systems means a single compromised organization can create exposure across multiple companies. Project documents can also have value for attackers even when they are not encrypted, making them useful for extortion.

The broader cybersecurity landscape is also changing. Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found that exploitation of software vulnerabilities has surpassed stolen credentials as the leading way attackers gain access, accounting for 31% of breaches. Ransomware was involved in 48% of breaches, while breaches involving third parties increased 60% to account for 48% of breaches. 

How Construction Firms Can Improve Cybersecurity and Fight Cyberattacks

Construction companies can reduce their exposure by focusing on several fundamental cybersecurity practices. These measures can help protect sensitive project information while reducing the risk of a cyberattack disrupting operations.

  • Patch software quickly. Regularly update operating systems, applications, network devices and other technology used across the office and jobsites. Companies should prioritize vulnerabilities known to be actively exploited, since attackers can use unpatched software as an entry point into a network. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends treating patch management as an essential part of ongoing cybersecurity maintenance.
  • Strengthen access controls. Require multifactor authentication (MFA) for email, cloud-based project management platforms, remote access, and administrative accounts. Companies should also limit employees, contractors, and third-party use of systems, allowing only information they actually need. CISA recommends using MFA wherever possible, with phishing-resistant MFA providing the strongest protection.
  • Protect and back up critical data. Sensitive project files, financial information, and other important data should be protected with appropriate access controls and encryption. Maintain regular, secure backups and test them to ensure they can actually be restored following a ransomware attack or other disruption.
  • Train employees. Technology alone cannot prevent every attack. Employees should receive regular training on phishing, fraudulent payment requests, text-message scams and other forms of social engineering. Training should also establish clear procedures for verifying unusual requests, particularly requests involving passwords, sensitive files or changes to payment information.
