Capitol Technology University's vision for modernized laboratory spaces has become a reality this fall, with updated facilities designed to support state-of-the-art research and inspire creative learning.

After a five-year process that began in 2018, our university successfully secured a State of Maryland Capital Projects Match grant that helped make this project possible. Through years of planning, fundraising, and collaboration, the financial foundation was built that was necessary to qualify for the state’s matching grant and secure a $3.5 million budget.

In addition to state-supported funding, Capitol Tech raised supplemental financial support to continue to furnish the new labs with cutting-edge equipment and advanced technology for students and faculty. One of our most notable labs was made possible by a generous donation from alumnus and entrepreneur Ed Sealing. Our new AI lab, CAILIE, houses the staff, servers, and other equipment supplied by the gift, and represents a shared commitment to preparing students for this rapidly evolving technology through innovative research opportunities and connections with industry partners.

During the construction, structural adjustments were made to the first floor of our MCI Building, including walls, flooring, and windows, to allow for the installation of new infrastructure and expansions. These renovations have become all-new lab areas for aviation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and engineering.

The Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Auditorium also received upgrades, including new carpet, lighting, and all-new audiovisual equipment, including video and streaming capabilities. Gifted to the university by the Gudelsky family in honor of their son, Avrum, the auditorium has long served as a central event location and a rentable space for our campus community. The interest accrued from their endowment is designated to provide for improvements like these.

We’re grateful for the vision provided by our Executive Council, and the dedication of our VP of Finance and Facilities Mike Betley, who saw the project through to completion.

“Investing in our campus is an investment in our students, our faculty, and the future of technology education here at Capitol Tech,” said Betley. “We’re incredibly grateful for the flexibility of our faculty and staff throughout construction, as well as the generous support of our funding partners who helped make these improvements possible.”

Together, these improvements demonstrate our university’s ongoing investment in innovation, collaboration, and student success, and will greatly enhance the student and visitor experience across campus. The updated facilities will provide wider and more flexible learning spaces, expanded makerspaces for laboratory work, and upgraded equipment designed to support technical, hands-on education. In addition, the refreshed spaces now feature video screens and fresh university branding to increase engagement with Capitol Tech’s identity and vision for the future.
