For doctoral student Stephanie Mbah, pursuing a Ph.D. in Cyber Leadership at Capitol Technology University is about more than earning the highest level of education in her field. It is an opportunity to apply her cybersecurity expertise to challenges that can have a direct impact on people's lives.
Stephanie began the doctoral program at Capitol Tech in April 2025, inspired in part by the accomplishments of her parents, who both earned doctoral degrees. Her decision to attend Capitol Tech was driven by the university's strong focus on cybersecurity and leadership, which are the two areas that align closely with her professional goals and research interests.
"My parents both earned doctoral degrees, and their accomplishments inspired me to pursue the highest level of education in my field," Stephanie said. "I chose Capitol Technology University because of its strong focus on cybersecurity and leadership."
Her doctoral research focuses on analyzing and mitigating cybersecurity threats in Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)-connected pacemakers. Through this work, Stephanie is examining cybersecurity vulnerabilities associated with connected pacemakers and exploring strategies to reduce potential risks.
The research is rooted in Stephanie's professional experience in cybersecurity and her desire to address emerging challenges at the intersection of technology and healthcare. As connected medical devices become increasingly important to modern healthcare systems, protecting them from cybersecurity threats is critical.
"Securing connected pacemakers is critical because these devices directly support patient health and safety," Stephanie said. "I hope my research will help improve security practices for connected medical devices and contribute to safer healthcare systems."
For Stephanie, one of the most rewarding aspects of her doctoral journey has been the opportunity to apply cybersecurity knowledge to real-world healthcare challenges. Conducting research with the potential to improve patient safety has made the experience particularly meaningful.
Like many doctoral students, Stephanie has also had to navigate the challenge of balancing academic work with professional and personal responsibilities. Staying organized, managing her time effectively, and remaining focused on her long-term goals have been essential to maintaining that balance.
Through the doctoral program, Stephanie has strengthened her research, analytical thinking, critical thinking, and leadership skills. The experience has also provided valuable opportunities to develop structured approaches to solving complex cybersecurity problems—skills that will continue to support her career beyond graduation.
