He shared a recommendation on his social media for The Smartest Guys in the Room, a book about the rise and fall of Enron, the notorious energy and trading company whose collapse in 2001 became one of the most significant corporate scandals in U.S. history. To his post, he added the ominous suggestion: “History is repeating. Time to read this one again, or for the first time.”
While provocative, Burry’s Enron reference points to a broader lesson and important reminder that technological innovation and financial success are not guaranteed—especially without proper governance. He points to circular financing deals, off-balance-sheet structures, and stretched depreciation schedules. Like Enron, which concealed debt to obscure its true financial position, Burry suggests that a similar pattern may be emerging in today’s AI boom.
The comparison and connection are not an accusation of fraud. Many of today's AI companies generate real revenue and breakthroughs that point towards sustained growth. Instead, skeptics are questioning the speed of this growth and calling for a more transparent and purpose-drive AI governance strategy.
