The Skills Gap Notion: Experts Say Students Are Proving Companies Wrong

For years, employers have described a shortage of job talent due to candidates who “look qualified on paper” but are unable to perform the actual work—commonly known as the “skills gap.” Yet recently, experts like science educator and engineer Bill Nye have challenged that narrative, suggesting that many organizations still reward credentials and hierarchy over curiosity and innovation, even as they cut entry-level roles where new talent can grow. For today's students, that makes one thing clear: Building real-world experience throughout their academic career is more important now than ever. before.

The Skills Gap Problem: Real or Perceived?

At the 2026 Toshiba NSTA ExploraVision competition, a team of high school students from Texas designed a micro-gap thermal diode to help cool overheating data centers, while students from Virginia developed an AI-powered drone that deters agricultural pests using sound instead of chemical pesticides. In competitions like this across the US, students continue to tackle challenges ranging from renewable energy and medical research to accessibility and climate resilience—often with ideas that carry significant real-world potential.

As students, they identified problems, collaborated with teammates, and built practical solutions through curiosity, experimentation, and persistence—all of which translate to strong career readiness. However, as employers continue to debate the growing skills gap, their work raises an important question: Is there truly a shortage of talent, or are companies overlooking transferrable competencies?

Addressing Career Readiness vs. Skill Gaps

Career-readiness researchers have documented a persistent gap between how students and employers assess preparedness. Graduates often feel confident in their skills, especially those like communication and critical thinking, while hiring managers tend to rate certain skills lower in terms of workplace readiness.

Part of the challenge may be how organizations define and identify talent. Traditional hiring practices often prioritize degree requirements, previous job experience, specific credentials, and familiar career paths—criteria that can overlook capable candidates who have already built valuable skills in nontraditional or non-workplace settings.

So, how can employers and candidates close the skills gap? Increasingly, the answer is not for organizations to wait for perfect candidates to appear, but to invest in recognizing them, recruiting them, and even developing them internally. Many companies now view in-house training and workforce development as one of the most effective solutions to this gap.

Closing the Perceived Skills Gap

If the skills gap relates to the ability to demonstrate one’s knowledge and abilities, Nye and other experts argue that the next generation can continue to show their experience through internships, certifications, research, extracurricular activities, personal projects, and portfolios that turn abstract abilities into tangible evidence on a resume.

The challenge is that those same career-readiness studies suggest students often don't recognize how exactly their coursework correlates to the competencies employers want. Digging deeper and naming the connection helps to close the gap and spell it out for hiring departments. For example, a class project is named “teamwork,” while a lab experiment is labeled “hands-on problem-solving.” And as AI absorbs more routine technical work, interpersonal skills like adaptability, communication, critical thinking, and the willingness to keep learning are also rising in value.

What Skills-Based Hiring Means for New Graduates

The market is shifting to meet students halfway. Roughly 85% of employers now report using some form of skills-based hiring, widening their talent pools by valuing what a candidate can demonstrate over where they went to school or previously worked.

Still, the transition is happening more gradually than the headlines suggest. Many employers continue to weigh degrees heavily alongside skills, leaning on work experience, internships, and apprenticeships as proof of ability. For students, this can act as a roadmap. Demonstrated competence, backed by real-world experience, is exactly what a strong portfolio of projects and internships can provide.
