Capitol Technology University successfully launched our first-ever AeroCamp this July, giving high school students an unforgettable introduction to aviation, aerospace, and flight training through a week of immersive, hands-on learning.
Designed for rising 9th–12th graders, AeroCamp allows participants to explore aviation fundamentals while learning directly from our faculty and exploring potential aviation careers.
Throughout the initial week, participants trained on Capitol Tech's new Redbird FMX flight simulator and gained real copiloting experience with instructors by flying at Fort Meade Executive Airport (FME) in Odenton, Maryland. For many students, this was their first time flying in a plane, affording them a rare opportunity.
"The enthusiasm from students and families exceeded every expectation," said Aviation Program Director, Frank Turney. "The response to our AeroCamp demonstrated a tremendous interest in aviation education amongst our local prospective students."
Demand for the program was so strong that a second half-week session was added to accommodate additional students who wanted to participate.
Gaining practical skills and mentorship, campers in the program also earned a Certificate of Completion and became eligible for a $5,000 FSANA AeroCamp Scholarship toward Capitol Tech’s Bachelor of Science in Aviation Professional Pilot program.
This undergraduate pilot program is the only four-year pilot degree offered within the Washington, DC Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA). It is authorized by the FAA to certify graduates with an accelerated Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) certificate, requiring 500 fewer flight hours than the traditional pathway.
Following two successful sessions and overwhelming interest from prospective campers, Capitol Tech plans to expand AeroCamp with additional sessions next summer. Poised to become a signature program at the university, AeroCamp—alongside Capitol Tech's aviation degree programs—is inspiring the next generation of aviators by introducing students to futures in flight.
