Black Girls Code Hosts DMV Summer Camp at Capitol Technology University

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Empowering the next generation by partnering for STEM youth education, hands-on experiences, and innovative technology learning.

Laurel, MD—Capitol Technology University is proud to host the Black Girls Code (BGC) DMV Summer Camp on the school’s Laurel, Maryland campus. This week-long immersive experience runs June 23–27, empowering local youth ages 10–18 with technical experience in computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as mentorship and networking with leadership, faculty, and peers.

BGC camp attendees participate in hands-on workshops demonstrating how to design and build their own applications using programming platforms and mobile frameworks. They engage in team-building activities to learn AI and machine learning basics as well as coding skills in collaborative environments that encourage critical thinking. They are invited to have open discussions with leading women in technology, providing real-world insight and inspiration. Through outdoor games, they explore movement-based STEM activities and team challenges. By participating, these campers are inspired to innovate new solutions to today’s tech challenges and gain practical skills in the field.

Participants in the Black Girls Code DMV Summer Camp learn programming and computer science basics from BGC experts and Capitol Tech faculty.

“Since 2011, Black Girls Code has been at the forefront of creating a more inclusive tech industry by inspiring, educating, and equipping young girls and women with the skills to lead and thrive in technology” stated Black Girls Code representatives. “Through culturally relevant programs for learners ages 7-18 and career acceleration initiatives for adults 18+, BGC is not just closing the opportunity gap—it’s shaping the future of tech by championing the next generation of innovators and leader.”

BGC has a longstanding partnership with Capitol Tech and is a strategic partner with the university’s Center for Women in Cyber (CWC). Facilitated by Dr. William Butler, Capitol Tech VP of Cyber Science Outreach and Partnerships and CWC Executive Advisory Board Member, as well as Brandy Turner, CWC Director, the center provides opportunities for individuals of all ages to pursue cyber careers. Through presentations, hands-on activities, event sponsorship, and mentoring, the CWC community provides direction, encouragement, and support to the next generation. Throughout the year, the CWC teams with strategic partners to provide STEM activities on campus. In the fall, their Women in Cyber Leadership series begins, and all are welcomed to join this virtual webinar series

“Seeing these incredible young women at the Black Girls Code DMV Summer Camp light up as they bring their ideas to life is powerful,” said Dr. Butler. “They're not just learning code—they're discovering their voices in tech, building confidence, and forming bonds that will carry far beyond the summer. These future innovators and changemakers are exactly why our partnership with BGC matters so much to Capitol. It’s about opening doors, creating spaces where they can thrive, and showing them they belong at the forefront of innovation.”

The mutual goal of this partnership is to create meaningful experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, strengthen technical skills, and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. Both Capitol Tech and BGC are committed to expanding access to technology education and look forward to continuing their collaboration to empower and equip young minds for success in the digital age.
