As part of a regular series, we’re talking with students, faculty, and staff about the things that make Capitol a great place to learn, build, and succeed. Today we spoke with Melanie Young, assistant director of registration and records, about the many hats she wears as part of the Capitol family. When Melanie isn’t busy working, teaching, or studying she enjoys watching movies, learning about pop culture, and attending stand-up comedy shows.

Capitol is a great place to work. It’s given me the opportunity to not only be part of its staff, but to be a student and an adjunct faculty member as well. The collective experience I’ve gained through all of my involvement helps me to better serve our students every day.

I love that I get to work in a department that is here for our students throughout their entire time at Capitol – from registration to graduation. It makes the moment when they cross the stage such a proud one for me. Viewing the live stream of our commencement ceremony this past spring even brought a tear to my eye when a former English student of mine was honored as the Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Scholarship recipient.

At Capitol we’re able to offer more of a personal touch than at other schools, which is a huge benefit of choosing to study or work here. I was employed at a larger university before becoming Assistant Registrar here and I can easily say that working in higher education is more rewarding when I get to learn the names and faces of all my students.

Our school motto, “Either find a way or make one,” perfectly embodies the spirit and culture of our school. The mentality we foster in our students to prepare them to be resourceful and determined paired with the skills they learn here could be used to literally change the world someday! It’s such an exciting prospect, and I love that I get to help make that happen.
