Senate President Bill Ferguson (Democrat – Baltimore City) is a lifelong Maryland resident and dedicated member of the community. He has been serving the state of Maryland through volunteerism and community outreach throughout his legislative career. He became a member of the Senate in January 2011, and in 2020, he was unanimously elected as the 86th Senate President by the State Senate, making him the second youngest Senate President in state history. He is currently Chair of the Senate Vaccine Oversight Work Group, Co-Chair of the Legislative Policy Committee, and serves on the Joint Covid-19 Response Legislative Work Group, Rules Committee, Executive Nominations Committee, and Spending Affordability Committee.

Senate President Ferguson is a strong advocate for education, and recognizes the importance of providing students with the means to success as our nation’s future leaders and innovators. He is a former teacher himself who taught history and government to Baltimore City Public High School students through the Teach for America program. Since then, he has served as a member of many other committees and task forces to promote quality of education. He was a signatory member of the Education Equality Project, which advocates for reform in the education system in terms of quality, equity, accountability, and affordability, as well as a councilman with the Education Commission of the States, which aims to develop effective policy and practice for public education.

As a member of the Joint Committee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Biotechnology, Senate President Ferguson advocated for institutions like Capitol Technology University which provide technology-focused education in an increasingly cyber-driven world. This committee seeks to advance cybersecurity in Maryland, and evaluates cybersecurity systems, economic development, and job skills training programs in an effort to increase knowledge, awareness, and support of advances in cybersecurity, information technology, and biotechnology.

Senate President Ferguson is an asset to education policy and legislation. His continued support of Maryland’s education system has ensured that Capitol Technology University, along with other colleges and universities, can provide viable opportunities for students pursuing higher education.
